The background of Jaleh Lackner-Gohari
is as an international medical professional. She is a graduate of
the Medical Faculty, Vienna University in Vienna, Austria. After
training as an internist, with emphasis in immunology and some years
of academic medical work including teaching and research, she later
joined the medical service of the United Nations in New York. Returning
to her home in Vienna, she was offered a position in the medical
services of Vienna-Based UN Organizations (IAEA, UNIDO, UNOV, UNRWA
and CTBTO) in the Vienna International Center. Years of field work
followed as a United Nations Medical Officer, in UN Peacekeeping
Missions in the Balkans: In Slavonia and in Bosnia & Herzegovina
(BIH) where she served as the medical coordinator to the respective
UN Mission, for some years.
The experience of working many years with a multicultural and expatriate
community, of men and women across cultures, strongly shaped the
outlook and focus of Dr. Lackner-Gohari toward existing specificities
of the presentation of diversity in international organizations.
The delicate situation of women in this population was noteworthy.
